under development This project started out as a documentary about the destruction of the arts center at 111 First Street and the conflict between artists, politicians and developers in Jersey City. Although it is a familiar, and essentially timeless story, Jersey City’s increasing growth will require us to make important decisions and changes in the coming months and years – an accessible website, as opposed to an historic documentary, seemed like best course of action.
Underdevelopment.tv is designed to be entertaining and informative, and hopefully for some, inspirational. I am constantly inspired by the creative and energetic people I meet and by highlighting some of their stories, I hope visitors to this site will be able to share that experience.

Frank O Cain New York City abstract painter and instructor at the Art Students League. He is unusual in that his abstract art derives from an elaborate study of long-forgotten fifteenth-century techniques. For a time, O'Cain's oil paintings involved no fewer than a hundred separate glazes. But all these now lie behind him. They bear witness to unusual technical accomplishments. Recently, O'Cain has been exploring a new approach to space in painting. As he says, I am always wandering about in the unknown, asking myself questions, creating new problems, finding fresh possibilities.

Saatchi Online Gallery The Saatchi Gallery has always aimed to provide an innovative forum for contemporary art, presenting work by largely unseen young artists or by established international artists whose work has been rarely or never exhibited in the UK. The audience for exhibitions of contemporary art has increased widely during the last ten years as general awareness and interest in contemporary art has developed in Britain. When The Saatchi Gallery first opened twenty years ago it was only those people who had a dedicated interest in contemporary art who sought out the gallery to see work by new artists. The audience, however, built steadily over the years and the gallery now receives over 600,000 visitors a year, and over 1,000 schools have organised student visits. The Saatchi Gallery has worked with media sponsors on a number of shows including The Observer, The Sunday Times, Evening Standard, The Independent on Sunday and Time Out. Many artists showing at The Saatchi Gallery are unknown when first exhibited, not only to the general public but also to the commercial art world. Many of these artists are subsequently offered shows by galleries and museums internationally. In this effect, the gallery also operates as a springboard for young artists to launch their careers.
The Art Students League The Art Students League New York was and still is a cooperative society based on mutual help among all its members. There have never been any degrees or diplomas, no set curriculum; one must be there solely for the love and pursuit of art, the yearning for the exchange of artistic ideas and techniques. It is an institution founded by students for students, and these are the major reasons the school has continued to flourish.
